5 Simple Steps to a Stress Free Moving Day

Selling your house and moving is supposed to be one of the most stressful things you can do – but it doesn’t have to be! Using a professional agent will see you through the ups and downs of putting your house on the market, and a few simple steps can make moving day fun for everyone!

Here are our top tips (from experience!) to make your moving day as stress free as possible.

  1. Give kids and pets a holiday

Moving house is most upsetting for the littlest creatures in your household, and it’s not a safe environment for them either. Their stress can become your stress, so give everyone an easier day and get someone responsible to look after them.

  1. Label everything properly

If you just write labels on the top of boxes, you’ll never know what’s inside when they are stacked up! So label boxes on the top and the sides with which room they’re due to go to, and a description of what’s inside.

  1. Pack a ‘survival box’

Pack a clearly labelled box of essentials to help you survive the day. Then put it in your car rather than leaving it for the removal team! The box should include:

  • Basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers and alan keys etc)
  • Snacks, drinks, tea bags etc.
  • Toiletries (including loo roll!), plasters and any important medication
  • Spare light bulbs in case they’re needed in the new property
  • Gloves if you’re going to be loading and unloading
  • Paper and pens to label rooms in the new property
  • Parcel tape and scissors
  • Dustpan and brush, bin bags and a cloth
  • And, if you can, put your kettle in the box too – everyone works better after a cup of tea!
  1. Think about the order

When you unpack a removal van, you want to take your furniture out first. Furniture should be the first thing into any room, otherwise you’ll trip over boxes while carrying a sofa! So put your boxes in the van first when you are moving out of your old property, that way everything will be in the right order when you unpack.

  1. Charge your phone

Make sure your phone is charged and everyone has everyone else’s phone numbers.  Take a note of other key phone numbers, including your bank, solicitor, estate agent, mortgage lender and friends and family (in case you need urgent help!).
